West Bengal has been renamed (posted on 20th August, 2011)
As suggested by the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal has been renamed as Paschimbanga w.e.f. 19th August, 2011. In the all-party meeting, it has been undisputedly agreed that the new name of the state will be Paschimbanga.
The resolution for renaming the state's name has been moved in the assembly and then it will be sent to the Centre where the new bill will be formulated in Parliament. On being cleared by both the houses of parliament and getting the approval from the President, the state will be renamed.
Partha Chatterjee, the Minister of Parliament Affairs said that the change in the name of State was required to avail the administrative advantages. It was earlier suggested by Chatterjee that as the letter 'W' in West Bengal comes very down alphabetically, it results in many disadvantages for the state.
