Ganesh Chaturthi (posted on 30th August, 2011)
Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu Festival celebrated on the occasion of birthday of Ganpati, one of the most worshipped deities of Hindu religion. It is celebrated on the 4th day of bright half (after new moon) of Bhadrapada (as per the Hindu calendar). As per the Gregorian calendar, it is celebrated during Late August or early September, depending on the Moon’s cycle. The usual dates are considered between 20th of August till 15th of September of any year. The festival is celebrated for 11 days and ends on Anant Chaturthi which is the fourteenth day after new moon.
For Ganesh Chaturthi, huge idols of Lord Ganesha are crafted and decorated in a beautiful manner. Many people buy idols of Lord Ganesha and install them at their homes. The Lord is worshipped there for 11 days and on the day of Ananta Chaturthi the idols, after celebrations, are immersed in the river, sea or well.
It is believed by the people that Lord Ganesha has the ability to remove all the obstacles and thus, brings good fortune in people’s lives. It is also assumed that one should not see the Moon on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, as the legend says that the Moon once laughed on Lord Ganesha when he had fallen.
Prayer to recite:
Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha
Nirvighnam Kurumedeva Sarvakaryeshhu Sarvada
Oh Lord Ganesha, the one with a trunk which is curves, has a huge body, and as brilliant as 10 million suns.
Oh Lord, please shower your blessings and make me and my belongings free from any obstacle ever.
