The legend
Gangotri is the origin of sacred river Ganga. The legend has it that after King Bhagirath’s severe penance, Lord Shiva got happy and rewarded him and Ganga came down to earth. Hence, due to her pride and to save the earth from devastation, Lord Shiva caught her in his locks.
