Gangotri
The legend
Gangotri is the origin of sacred river Ganga. Ganga is considered to be the holiest river in India and it is said that if you put a few drops of the holy waters of River Ganga in the moth of a dying man then he attains salvation or Moksha. The legend has it that after King Bhagirath’s severe penance, Lord Shiva got happy and rewarded him and Ganga came down to earth. According to Hindu mythology Goddess Ganga is regarded as the daughter of heaven and it was believed that if Ganga descended then Earth would not be able to take her full force. Hence, due to her pride and to save the earth from devastation, Lord Shiva caught her in his locks. It was then proclaimed that Ganga would descend on earth only if goddess Parvati bathed in it daily. The stones near the temple in Gangotri denote the place where Ganga first descended on earth. It is believed that Goddess Ganga manifested herself in the form of a river to release the sins of King Bhagirath’s predecessors, hence Ganga is also known as Bhagirathi. If you avail Gangotri trip packages in winters then you would be treated to the rare site of the natural rock Shivling in the middle of the river. It is said that is the very spot where lord Shiva sat to take the waters of Ganga into his locks.
